Sen. Koehler Introduces Civil Union Legislation

The Journal Star covered the Senator’s introduction of civil union legislation that was introduced in the House a year ago.  I enjoyed reading the bigotry and misinformation being spread in the comments of the article. It really is amazing how hate and ignorance drive conversation on this topic.

Log Cabin Illinois Morns Passing of Representative Hyde

The Log Cabin Republicans of Illinois regretfully announce the passage of Rep. Henry Hyde.  Representative Hyde served in the United States House of Representatives from 1975 to 2007.  He represented Illinois’ 6th District in Northeast DuPage County.  He chaired the Judiciary Committee from 1995 to 2001 and the House International Relations Committee from 2001 to 2007.  He became a household name across America when he served as the lead House manager during President Bill Clinton’s impeachment trial, where he was constitutionally bound to impeach Clinton for perjury.

Representative Hyde and Democrat, Tom Lantos (D-CA), authored America’s worldwide response to the HIV/AIDS crisis in 2003 and the associated landmark foreign assistance legislation.

Hyde received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, on November 5, 2007 shortly after his retirement.

A veteran, a lawyer, and a public servant, Henry Hyde has served his country with honor and dedication. During his 32-year career in the House of Representatives, he was a powerful defender of life, a leading advocate for a strong national defense, and an unwavering voice for liberty, democracy, and free enterprise around the world. A true gentleman of the House, he advanced his principles without rancor and earned the respect of friends and adversaries alike. Log Cabin mourns Henry Hyde and remembers him for his distinguished record of service to America.

I am happy to announce that Log Cabin Illinois has elected a new board for 2008.

Next week the new board will caucus and assign office holders. But so far, the new board is made up of:

David Valkema, Greg Katz, John Gottlick, Jessica Jagielnik, Richard Lorenc, Eric Johanson and myself, Michael Carr.

Congratulations everyone, I’m looking forward to a productive 2008!

Election and Speaker Tonight!

We hope to see you at the November General Membership meeting and board election meeting tonight at 7:00PM, November 6th.  The meeting will be held at the usual place in the upstairs room at the Red Lion Pub (MAP), 2446 N. Lincoln Ave, Chicago.

We will have a very short business meeting to include the new board election.

The rest of the meeting will be a presentation by Sheila Weinberg of the Institute for Truth in Accounting to tell us about the Illinois budgeting and accounting procedures and how the Federal Government’s Budget and Accounting Office works within our state system.  There will be plenty of time for questions.

We will also be announcing some exciting new changes in Log Cabin Illinois’ meeting format.

Board Election Next Month!

We will be electing the board of directors for Log Cabin Illinois at the next general meeting, November 6th at the Red Lion 7pm.

In order to vote or run for a seat on the board you have to be current with your dues. Jay will be able to assist us with making this determination.

Voting is by secret ballot, and yes you can vote for yourself! Voters must be present, proxies will not be accepted.

The charter authorizes the general membership to elect between 5 and 9 members to the board. The current board is recommending that 7 members are elected to the board.

John and Jay will not be seeking re-election.

David, Michael, Eric and Richard will be seeking re-election.

Please email me at mcarr@logcabinchicago.org if you are interested in running for the board. Please submit a brief statement of interest, providing some background information and why you are seeking a board seat. Statements of interest must be in by October 23rd in order for us to distribute the statements to the general membership for review.

On the day of election I’ll be seeking at least one Inspector of Election who will assist in the counting of the votes, this person may not be a candidate in this board election.

Before the December general meeting the newly elected board will caucus and elect office holders.
